5 Key Tips to Help Your Struggling Teen Find a Job

By energy_linguist, April 23, 2010, Job Hunting

Teen job hunting adviceIt goes without saying that this challenging economy makes it even more daunting for a younger generation of workers to establish an approach for the job hunt. It may be that time is of absolute essence, as families feeling the number crunch means everyone pitches in some shape, form or fashion.

Here are 5 tips to helping your teen find a job:

  1. Establish goals, strengths and weaknesses. Ask your teen to make a list of ideal job “types,” as well as jobs they absolutely don’t want to pursue (not everyone is a candidate for fast food).
  2. Even with limited (or none in some cases) consider alternative ways to approach a resume and cover letter. Balk at tradition and create a LinkedIn page for your teen that incorporates their unique skills sets, volunteer experience, etc.
  3. Encourage your teen to dig deeper for a more challenging job experience. Just because it’s easy to hop over to the local ice cream shop doesn’t mean there isn’t a more intellectually stimulating opportunity out there waiting.
  4. Help your teen understand the power of online social networking. Help them leverage communities like LinkedIn and Twitter with a strategy and  a unique approach to networking for employment opportunities. Have them focus on what value they offer a particular social community and actually network by participation versus just talking shop.
  5. Establish consistency. Rinse and repeat.
