Free Events for Kids Around Town

By brooke, April 16, 2010, For Moms

Now that the weather is getting a little warmer (hopefully) and there is no longer snow on the ground in places where there shouldn’t be, I am starting to get the itch to get out of the house! While still on a budget, I’ve been looking for some places around town that offer free or inexpensive options to get us out of the house. Here are a few ideas that I have found:

  1. Libraries. Most libraries offer children events throughout the day and they are all free! Houston Public Library offers events such as Baby Time, which is an opportunity for babies to interact with others in an educational setting, Playgroups where they provide stores, songs and activities for babies, toddlers and moms.
  2. Local parks. I blogged about this before, but always keep them in mind. Check your local parks for free activities offered during the day. I know Discovery Green in Houston has plenty of free activities for the kiddos and there are various parks in Dallas. Not only  is it a good way to get your children out in some fresh air but it’s good for the parents too.
  3. Book Club at Pottery Barn Kids. Every Tuesday from 11:00-11:30 a.m. kids of all ages are invited to gather at Pottery Barn Kids for story time. The only thing to watch out for is the cute decorative $75 lamp or any other item that may catch your eye – because there goes the “free” outing. Click here to find a store near you that offers this event.
  4. Museums. The Houston Children’s Museum offers free admission for children under one year old, and every Thursday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. admission is free for everyone. In the Dallas/Fort Worth area, the Museum of Nature & Science offers a special family membership that isn’t free but it comes with a Kids Club membership. The Kids Club membership is a partnership between the Museum of Nature & Science, the Dallas Arboretum,  Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Zoo and Trinity River Audubon Center. In addition, you receive discounts for any of the other participating organizations that you aren’t already a member of.
  5. Local paper/Online resources. The Dallas Observer and The Houston Press have lists online of free events and family events around town.   There are also online resources that list free or inexpensive events around town. Here are few that I thought I would mention:

Houston:

Dallas:

  • GoCityKids.com – Dallas
  • MomsOutLoud.com – this page lists many different free or “cheap” events for families with children around the area
  • GuideLive.com – this site also lists more activities around the town and breaks them down by categories as well, one being Kid-friendly events.
