Eco-Volunteering – Working with Elephants in Thailand

By energy_linguist, September 20, 2010, News, Tips & Information

So I’ve literally stumbled upon (pun intended) one of the coolest sites in existence.

Ecovolunteer.org presents ample opportunities to spin your conservation wheels in several countries across the globe, helping conservation efforts in local villages and towns.

The cost is relatively low considering meals and lodging are provided. Granted, the living quarters will be super simple, but that’s the quality of life you should be seeking if you’re interested in eco-volunteering (4-star resorts need not apply).

I centered my radar on a particular trip opportunity – Working with elephants south of Bangkok, Thailand:

  • Cost is approx. $500 per week per person, which includes lodging and food.
  • You’ll work hands-on with the elephants, washing, cleaning them and their feeding areas.
  • Accommodations are shared and very simple/rustic bungalows with European toilets and the like, but food for lunches/dinners is prepared by a local = awesome.
  • YOU get to accompany the elephants into the forest for foraging. Repeat … elephant waking will happen.

I’m not sure if eco-volunteering on a budget is for everyone, but if you’re looking to do some traveling and gain a tremendous cultural experience at a very affordable price, then I suggest you take a closer look.

Hey, I want to visit Thailand as much as anyone, so this just seems too perfect to pass up.
