How to Save Money on Gas

About a year ago, Bounce Energy Savings provided you with tips on how to save more money at the gas pump. It’s weird to think that just over a year ago, we considered an average gas price of $2.41/gallon to be expensive. Gas prices now are about a dollar above that at $3.40/gallon and expected to go up to $5/gallon by 2012!
We’ve compiled even more tips to help you save money on gasoline:
- Find the cheapest gas in your area with smartphone apps. If you have a smartphone, there are many apps you can download that will find and compare fuel stations that offer the cheapest gasoline so you won’t have to drive around yourself and waste even more gas.
- Buy a different car. The point of Bounce Energy Savings is to help consumers save money and we’re telling you to spend money on a new car?! Yes, trading in your truck or other gas-burning car in for a hybrid or a smaller car can help you save money in the long run because these vehicles use less gas and have more miles per gallon. And for the more adventurous, how about a motorcycle or scooter? Motorcycles can get 60-70 MPG at highway speeds.
- Avoid idling in your car. When you idle your car for 6 seconds, you use the same amount of gas as starting the car. Rather than idling in the drive-through, go into the restaurant and place your order. Idling with the air conditioning running uses up even more fuel.
- Drive consistently. Try and avoid accelerating quickly and hard braking. Coast to a stop before breaking to a complete halt.
- And once your light turns green, take off slowly and don’t accelerate too fast. It will have dramatic effects on your gas mileage.
- Park in the shade. When you park directly in the sun, the gasoline evaporates at a faster rate. Parking in the shade also has another benefit. It keeps your car cooler so you will need less A/C to cool your car when you get back in.
