Dieting Doesn’t Mean Spending More Money

Many people often hear dieting and think that it means spending a whole lot of extra money on “special” foods and having to eat certain things that can be expensive. Dieting does not mean spending more money. If you really look at any diet program, the concept is eating less. Overall, it’s about consuming fewer calories. That means that you can save money by using the food you’ve already purchased and just eat less of it. You can still also enjoy all of your favorite meals at your favorite restaurants.
When you go out to eat, restaurants are famous for giving a portion that is entirely too large. What this means for you is the ability to save money on food. If you were going to get a pasta dish anyways, then you can still get it. Now that you’re dieting and counting calories, however, the portion is going to be too large. To save money, you’ve got a few choices. You can either turn that meal into two meals and share it with someone, or you can take it home in a doggy bag.
Many restaurants know that they have large portions and that’s why they offer to-go containers. Many diet resources will actually suggest that as soon as a meal is delivered, you ask for a to-go container. You can then take half of the entrée and place it in the box and forget about it until it’s time to leave. This will allow you to eat the correct portion and have another meal that’s virtually free for another day.
If you’re not dining out and you want to eat healthy at home, it’s entirely possible. You can find ways at the grocery store to shop, save money and still manage ways to eat healthy. It’s important to decide on what kind of diet you will be following or if it’s simply going to be about consuming less food. Either is fine but there are some cardinal rules you must follow.
One of the first rules about dieting and grocery shopping is never go shopping on an empty stomach. This is a sure way to end up with a cart full of food that you don’t need and shouldn’t eat. It’s advised to eat lunch (or breakfast or dinner) and then do your shopping. This way you’ll get only what you need.
Another aspect of shopping is to use a list. If you use a list, you’ll be able to stick to the list and buy only what you need, which is of course healthy. Go through recipes, either online or in a cookbook, and decide on ingredients that you’ll need. Fresh vegetables are better for you than canned because key nutrients are lost in the canning process. It’s also vital that you follow the portion sizes of what the recipes say. If you are cooking for two and the recipe says it makes 4, which means you either cut the recipe in half or wrap up the other 2 servings for another meal.
There are many grocery items that have coupons for them. Cutting coupons is an excellent way to save money as long as you are only using coupons for items that you need. There are plenty of products that are fattening and filled with preservatives that have high value coupons. Avoid these! There are plenty that also offer discounts on produce with the purchase of certain items as well as many new diet foods.
Remember that a key component to eating healthy is about calorie counting and a general reduction of food intake. That doesn’t mean you have to starve yourself, but you do have to watch what you eat. Establish a calorie count that you’re going to follow and then adhere to it with using new recipes, lists of ingredients and healthy products. Dining out, too, can still be fun. The rule of thumb, however, is to eat about half of what is served in the restaurant as a single meal.
There are plenty of ways to save money and eat healthy. It doesn’t always have to be about spending a lot of money. Stock your pantry with healthy items and eat in moderation and you’ll find that you’re saving more money than you expected.
