Ways to Steer Clear of the Common Cold

My daughter caught her first cold this weekend. And as we nursed her back to health while trying to protect ourselves from catching it as well, I started researching ways to prevent a cold. Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe from a common cold.

  • Tip #1. Wash your hands. This is over course the most obvious one but probably the most important one too. If you have the flu and sneeze once into your hand, those germs can live for hours and in some cases weeks. so anything you touch, door handle, computer, telephone, etc. after sneezing can spread the disease to anyone who touches those infected objects.
  • Tip #2. Don’t touch your face. Cold and flu viruses enter your body through the eyes, nose or mouth. According to WebMD, “touching their faces is the major way children catch colds and the key way they pass colds on to their parents.”
  • Tip #3. Work out. This one solved a major debate between my husband and I. It turns out that exercise can help increase the body’s natural virus-killing cells.
  • Tip #4. Eat yogurt. Who knew this could actually help? Some studies actually show that by eating a daily cup of low-fat yogurt can reduce your susceptibility to colds by 25%!
  • Tip #5. Ditch the pill and eat your vitamins. It turns out that natural chemicals in plants give the vitamins in food a supercharged boost. Be sure to eat dark green, red, and yellow vegetables and fruits for that vitamin boost.
